Is couples therapy or relationship counselling in Melbourne right for us?
Therapy Atelier is a couples-only psychotherapy practice working with Melbourne couples in two ways: secure online sessions that fit around city schedules, and in-person work — including multi-day intensives — at the practice in Mornington, an hour down the Peninsula. Ninety-minute sessions, complete discretion, couples and nothing else.
Melbourne couples who want relationship counselling with depth rather than a quick fix:
- professionals whose conflict has calcified into distance
- couples rebuilding after an affair — see couples therapy after an affair
- partners weighing whether to stay or separate
- busy households where the relationship keeps landing last
Online sessions mean the work can actually happen — no commute, no waiting list logic, the same structure as in-person work. Melbourne couples often begin with a search for marriage counselling, or for a relationship counsellor near the city; what they find here is couples psychotherapy — the same ground, worked more slowly and more deeply.
How I work with couples
I’m Tumee Hugginson — a psychotherapist and couples therapist with Gottman Method training at Level 3 and a Jungian psychoanalytic background. Sessions run ninety minutes, usually weekly, drawing on depth psychology, attachment science and the Gottman Method.
For couples who prefer to concentrate the work, three- and five-day intensives in Mornington are often the better shape — many Melbourne couples pair an intensive with online follow-up. My work is grounded in Gottman-informed and psychodynamic depth approaches.
What sessions look like
- A couples-only practice, not a general clinic.
- Ninety-minute sessions, not rushed hours.
- Online work held to the same standard of care and confidentiality as the consulting room.
And honesty about the work itself: outcomes in therapy are never guaranteed — what you get is serious, structured attention to your relationship.

Working with Melbourne couples
Most Melbourne couples here work online. Ninety minutes by secure video from your own home removes the two things that most often end couples therapy prematurely: the cross-city drive at the end of a working day, and the difficulty of getting two busy people into the same room at the same hour every week.
Online work also suits couples whose lives are not reliably in one place — where one partner travels for work, where you are between homes, or where you are separated for a period and still want to do the work.
Where couples prefer to meet in person, the rooms are at Suite 4, 346 Main Street, Mornington, about an hour from the inner south-east. Some Melbourne couples make that journey once and then continue online; others come down for a concentrated block instead.
The intensive option, for couples who cannot do weekly
A weekly appointment is not always realistic across a Melbourne working week, and for some couples it is not the right shape anyway. Marathon couples therapy holds several sessions across consecutive days, and couples intensives run to three or five.
A three-day intensive holds roughly the clinical hours that weekly work would take four to five months to accumulate, and holds them consecutively — so nothing has to be rebuilt at the start of each appointment. For couples facing something urgent, that difference is the point rather than a convenience.
Questions Melbourne couples ask
Is online couples therapy as effective as meeting in person?
In my experience it works well for most couples, and the practical gain is real: sessions actually happen. Where a couple needs to be in the same room — and some do — we arrange that.
What if one of us is unsure about the relationship?
That is a different piece of work, and it is set out on the page for when one of you is unsure.
Is couples therapy covered by Medicare?
No, and not with any practitioner in Australia; the fees page explains.
Do you see individuals?
No. This is a couples-only practice. Couples from different cultural or linguistic backgrounds may also want to read about intercultural couples.
